8/8: Pressure Needed to Enforce Methane Rule

**DEADLINE AUGUST 9, 2017** In June, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a two-year suspension of the Obama-era oil and gas methane pollution rule. This ensures that the protections will not go into effect while the agency revisits and rewrites the rule. Every year these rules remain dormant, greenhouse gases are released, royalty money is lost, and air quality is diminished unnecessarily. In their announcement, the EPA even acknowledged that “the environmental health or safety risk addressed by this action may have a disproportionate effect on children.”

Even though two recent court rulings have directed the EPA to enforce the methane pollution rule, the comment period still remains open, a final decision on the 2 year delay of the rule has not been made, and it’s important that the EPA continues to hear that the American public does not support any further delay of this important public health protection.
