BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  This is a statewide action coordinated by Indivisible, CO as part of the Defund Hate Coalition, a group of immigration advocacy, immigrant-led, border community, civil liberties, and civil society organizations including:
United We Dream, Detention Watch Network, National Immigrant Justice Center, American Civil Liberties Union, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, CREDO, Indivisible, Move On, National Immigration Law Center, Church World Service, and the Southern Border Communities Coalition, among others.DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE OF EVENT:  To make visible and get the word out that we do NOT want to fund hate and that we support our asylum seekers and immigrant communities.  In light of recent theft of FEMA funds for increased capacity to lock people up and harass and deport them, it is timely and critical that we let our reps know that we don’t want “one more penny” to go to ICE and CBP.  This is an opportunity to show our communities “where they live” that we support asylum seekers and our immigrant communities. Bring a sign, friends, a water bottle and couple your energy with call or email to congressional reps.
Legislative introduction:  Congress has steadily increased funding for Homeland Security since the Department was established in 2003. The agencies tasked with immigration  enforcement – ICE and CBP – have been granted an outrageous (and ever-increasing) budget for their mission.  Congress must fight the atrocities Trump is committing at the Southern border and throughout this country by cutting the funding that that the agencies that most drive these abuses – ICE and CBP – receive from congressional appropriations.
